It is Easter again, what makes it special?

TombIt is Easter again, what makes it special?

The Gospel

This is the Good News of our salvation. It is the message that is of first importance. It is the message that must be communicated as the most important thing any time we meet a non-believer. Paul writes to the Corinthians;

1 Corinthians 15: 1-6

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

  • The centrality of our faith is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus,
  • The atonement for our sins
  • and our blessed hope, the glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ

If this is the Good News, what is the bad news?

The bad news as stated in Ephesians 2

  • We were dead in our transgression (v1)
  • We walked following the course of this world (v2)
  • We were under the dominion of satan (v2)
  • We were sons of disobedience (v2)
  • We lived in the passions of our flesh (v3)
  • We were by nature the children of wrath (v3)
  • We were separated from Christ (v12)
  • We were strangers to the covenant of the Promise (v12)
  • We were far off (v13)
  • We were without hope and without God (v12)

  • We strayed like sheep each of us turned in our own separate ways (Isaiah 54:6)
  • We all sinned and fell short of His glory (Romans 3:23)
  • We were under the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13)
  • We were alienated and hostile in mind and doing evil things (Colossians 1:21)

This is just to mention but a few

What happened when the Good News happened?

  • He conquered the enemies of God :

Sin: Has no dominion over me: (Hebrews 9:26-28)

Death: we have hope beyond the grave. (1 Corinthians 15:13-22, 1 Corinthians 15:55)

Satan:  we are no longer under the power of satan. (Romans 16:20 , Acts 26:16-18)

  • He became the propitiation for our sin (1 John 4:10)
  • He canceled the record of debt that stood against us (Colossians 2:13-14)

From Ephesians 2

  • He made us alive together with Christ (Ephesians 2:5)
  • He raised us with Him in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (v7)
  • We are His workmanship (v10)
  • We have been brought near (v13)
  • He is our peace (v14)
  • He has broken down the wall of hostility (v14)
  • He has reconciled us back to God (v16)
  • We have access in One Spirit to the Father (v18)
  • We are no longer strangers but fellow citizens (v19)
  • We are the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21)
  • We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sin (Ephesians 1:7)
  • He made known to us the mystery of His will (Eph 1:9)
  • We have been sealed with the Promised Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13, Galatians 1:14)
  • He redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13)
  • In Christ the blessing of Abraham came to us the Gentiles (Galatians 1:14)
  • We are children of Promise (Galatians 4:28)
  • We have been known by God (Galatians 4:9)
  • We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession (1 Peter 2:9)
  • We have an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading kept for us in heaven (1 Peter 1:4)
  • We are God’s children (1 John 3:2a )

These are just but a few insights of so much more! Indeed in Townend’s words,

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measures that He could give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away, As wounds that mar the Chosen One, bring many sons to Glory!

Have a reflective Easter Friends!
